SYMPTOMS
When you start Windows 98 Second Edition on a computer that uses the Intel ICH2 I/O Controller Hub chip set, Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices may not be successfully enumerated. When this problem occurs, Windows appears to be installing new hardware, and add the USB devices as unknown devices. In addition, the following key is added to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_0000&PID_0000 WORKAROUNDWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
Disable USB Legacy Support in the computer's BIOS. NOTE: Do not use this workaround if you are using a USB keyboard, because this will disable the keyboard during the boot process until Windows starts.
Method 2
When the problem occurs, use Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) to delete the following key in the registry, and then restart your computer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_0000&PID_0000 STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
