SYMPTOMS

Prior to Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), when a Windows 2000 service pack was deployed by using Update.msi and then manually uninstalled by using the Add/Remove Programs tool, an entry would remain in the Add/Remove Programs list for that service pack. However, you could run Winver.exe to see that the service pack was uninstalled. When you try to remove the service pack entry from the Add/Remove Programs list, you may receive the following error message:
Nothing to Do

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, note that this problem is fixed in the Update.msi file that is included with Windows 2000 SP3. For additional information about the latest service pack for Windows 2000, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you deploy Windows 2000 SP3 over Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) by using Update.msi, the only entry in the Add/Remove Programs list is for Windows 2000 Service Pack 3. If you manually uninstall Windows 2000 SP3 by using the Add/Remove Programs tool, the listing for the previous service pack reappears.

When you use the Add/Remove Programs tool to manually uninstall a service pack that was deployed by using Update.msi, this service pack cannot be deployed again by using Update.msi. This behavior is by design as it is assumed an administrator will only manually uninstall a deployed service pack for good reason and most likely would not want the service pack reinstalled again automatically. In this case, the only way to install a service pack on the computer would be to deploy a newer version of the service pack, or to manually install the recently-removed service pack.
