XCCC: Error Message: MIS ISAPI Filter Could Not Authenticate the User (315121)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002

This article was previously published under Q315121

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Mobile Information Server Internet Security Acceleration (ISA) filter on a Microsoft ISA Server computer, and then you use the domain mapping tool for handling pre-authentication of requests from Pocket PC users to synchronize with their respective Inboxes, you may receive the following error message in the Event Viewer:
Source: MIS ISAPI Filter
Event ID: 96
MIS ISAPI filter could not authenticate the user xxx. Bind operation with the LDAP server failed with the following error: Success

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an incorrect address is specified in the domain mapping tool, and as a result, a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) bind error occurs.

NOTE: The last part of this error message, which indicates success, is misleading and should be ignored.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, insert the correct address in the domain mapping tool.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have multiple domains, you can use the domain mapping tool to map the external Domain Name System (DNS) address to the corresponding internal DNS namespace. A domain controller for the internal DNS domain must be accessible during this pre-authentication stage.
