Money: "Please Insert the Money 2001 CD" Error Message When You Start Microsoft Money (315113)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Money 2002 or later on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive a Microsoft Windows Installer error message that is similar to the following:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable media that is not available. Please insert the Money 200<x> CD. The <x> being a previous version of Money that you have had installed on your machine.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • An earlier version of Money was installed on the computer.
  • There is an entry for the previously installed version of Money in the "Currently installed programs" list in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this behavior, follow these methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1

Note Before you follow these steps, make sure that you back up any Money files that you want to save.
  1. Log on to the computer as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the "Currently installed programs" list, click Microsoft Money version number, and then click Remove.
  5. In the "Currently installed programs" list, click Microsoft Money version number System Pack, and then click Remove.
  6. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folders, where C is the drive where Windows is installed:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money

    Note The location of these folders may be different on your computer if you installed Microsoft Money to a location on your hard disk other than the default location.
  7. Right-click each folder, and then click Delete.
  8. Log off the computer as Administrator.
Go to Method 2.

Method 2

  1. Log on to the computer by using another user account.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Make sure that the earier version of Money is not displayed in the "Currently installed programs" list.

    If there is an entry for the earlier version, click the listing, and then click Remove.
  5. Log off the computer.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each user account on the computer.

    Note If you cannot remove the entry of a earlier version of Money from the "Currently installed programs" list in Add/Remove Programs, you may have to install and run the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (Msicuu.exe). For additional information about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, see the "More Information" section of this article.
  7. Log on to the computer as Administrator.
  8. Run the current Money setup.
