SYMPTOMS

If you use a Cisco PIX 520 firewall to secure network access, and Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy automatic configuration (PAC) file behind the firewall, Internet Explorer may prompt you four times for your user name and password before you can gain access to the network. This problem occurs if anonymous access is disabled for the PAC file and basic authentication is required.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 5.5 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, enable anonymous access to the PAC file.
