PostScript printer does not show all the supported paper sizes on French Windows 2000 and Windows XP clients (314816)

SYMPTOMS

If all the following conditions exist, you may not be able to select letter or legal paper sizes in a program such as Microsoft WordPad or Microsoft Word for Windows:
  • Your printer is connected to an English-language, Microsoft Windows 2000-based or Microsoft Windows XP-based print server.
  • You are trying to print from a French-language, Windows 2000 Professional-based or Windows XP Professional-based client computer.
  • You are using the printer drivers for Point-and-Print PostScript printers from the English-language Windows 2000 CD-ROM or Windows XP CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

Windows 2000

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Critical Notes

To make this fix work correctly, you must complete the following procedure:
  1. Install this hotfix on all the client computers.
  2. Change the default printer settings on the Windows 2000-based or Windows XP-based print server. The requirement is to just "Apply" the new default printer settings so that you can just modify the existing settings, and then reapply them. This forces the clients to automatically pull down the new settings from the server.
