SYMPTOMS

After you delete a drive mapping by using the net use * /d command at a command prompt, Windows Server 2003 may still show the active path of the previous drive mapping in the new mapped drive.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you map the drive to a removable medium. All removable media, such as floppy disks and Zip disks, work this way.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The following example shows how this behavior occurs if, for example, you map drive Z to a share that was created on a floppy disk.
  1. Map drive Z to a share that was created on a floppy disk (drive A).
  2. Create a nested folder structure so that folder C resides in folder B, and folder B resides in a root folder on drive A.
  3. Follow the path to the nested folder C, that is, a:\b\c.
  4. Change back to the root drive, and then disconnect the mapped drive by typing net use z: /d.
  5. Remap the network drive, and then change back to the mapped drive. The beginning path is still a:\b\c, rather than the default a:\.
