RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, do one of the following:
Restart your computer by using a clean-boot procedure, and then install DirectX. To do this, follow these steps.
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
Restart Computer by Using a Clean-Boot Procedure
Follow the steps appropriate for your situation.
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Microsoft Windows 98
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- Click the General tab. Click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Config.sys File
- Process Autoexec.bat File
- Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
- Process Win.ini File
- Load Startup Group Items
- Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
Install DirectX
- Insert your Picture It! CD-ROM 1.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type
D:\PIP\REDIST\DIRECTX8\dxsetup.exe
where D: is your CD-ROM drive. - Click OK, and then follow instructions onscreen to complete the installation process.NOTE: You can also DirectX from the following Microsoft Web site:
Download Windows Installer 2.0
You may also need to update the Windows Installer. You can download the latest version of Windows Installer from the Microsoft Download Center. Please click on the appropriate link for your operating system:
Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.or Windows 2000
Restart Your Computer in Safe Mode
- Click Start, then click Shut Down.
- Click Restart the Computer, and then click Yes.
- If you are using Windows 95, as soon as you see the message Starting Windows 95, press F5.
If you are using Windows 98, press and hold the CTRL key as soon as the POST (Power on Self Test) has completed. - When Windows finishes loading, close the message about Safe Mode.
If the problem does not happen while in Safe Mode, and you are using Windows 95, follow the instructions in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If the problem does not happen while in Safe Mode, and you are using Windows 98, query in the Microsoft Knowledge base for articles relating to the issue that is occurring.
Install Windows Installer 2.0
To install the Windows Installer, double-click the Instmsi.exe file that you downloaded earlier, and then follow the onscreen instructions. Once the installation is finished, restart your computer and install Picture It!
