SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows XP from a Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based system, you may experience any of the following behaviors:
  • During the upgrade procedure, the Windows XP Upgrade report displays the following information:
Microsoft Exchange Inbox is not Windows XP Compatible.
If you click Full Details, the following information is displayed:

Your Microsoft Exchange Inbox will not work after setup is complete. Consider using Microsoft Outlook Express instead.

  • A program that uses Microsoft Windows Messaging does not work.
  • The Microsoft Mail postoffice and mail icons are not displayed in Control Panel.
  • The Start menu contains a shortcut for Windows Messaging, but the shortcut does not work.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur because Windows Messaging is not supported in Windows XP. Microsoft Mail postoffice and mail icons are removed during the upgrade process.

RESOLUTION

For local workgroup mail functionality, you may want to use Microsoft Exchange Server. This requires a Windows NT or Windows 2000-based server, or Microsoft Small Business Server (which includes Exchange Server).

MORE INFORMATION

Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) is a set of functions that mail-enabled and mail-aware programs can use to create, transfer, store, and otherwise handle mail messages. It contains tools that program developers can use to define the purpose and content of mail messages, and provides flexibility in the management of stored mail messages. MAPI also provides a common interface that program developers can use to create mail-enabled and mail-aware programs, independent of the underlying messaging system. Messaging clients provide an interface for interaction with the Windows Messaging System (WMS). This interaction typically includes a request for services from MAPI-compliant providers, such as message stores and address books.

Microsoft recommends that vendors upgrade their programs to use Collaboration Data Objects (CDO).
