SYMPTOMS

When you are using non-Active Directory-integrated DNS, it is not possible to reload zones that include the following Windows-reserved words:
  • CON
  • AUX
  • COM1
  • COM2
  • COM3
  • COM4
  • LPT1
  • LPT2
  • LPT3
  • PRN
  • NUL

Examples

  • com1.com
  • prn.co.uk

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the DNSCMD utility to create the zone by using a different, compliant name. For example:

DNSCMD /ZONEADD com2.com /Primary /File com2!.com.dns

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Zone files are typically named after the zone and in the example cases are not permitted.

The zone continues to work until DNS is restarted. After this occurs, the contents of the zone are not available.
