Problems When You Install a Windows 2000 Hotfix on a Computer Running the MUI Version of Windows 2000 (313734)

SYMPTOMS

You may encounter errors when you try to install a Windows 2000 hotfix on a computer that is running the MultiLanguage User Interface (MUI) version of Windows 2000 and the default language is set to anything other than English.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when Hotfix.exe in the pre-Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) hotfix package incorrectly reads file version information that is stored in the hotfix file's .mui resource file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, switch from the language that you are using back to the default language (English) before you install the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
