RIP Routes Are Not Updated Correctly on Windows 2000-Based Computers That Have Large RIP Updates (313617)

SYMPTOMS

Router Information Protocol (RIP) version 2 routes may not be updated on Windows 2000-based computers. A route may randomly not appear on the Windows 2000-based RIP router, but may either appear a few minutes, after a longer period of time, or not at all. RIP update packets with more than 1,000 updated routes typically cause this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of the size of the buffer that Winsock uses to receive the RIP traffic packets. A 64-kilobyte (KB) buffer size is used for RIP updates and this buffer is not large enough in size to handle very large RIP update packets.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
