XCON: The MTA Stops When Receiving a Message with a Deferred Delivery Date; Fix Requires Exchange 2000 SP2 (313573)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server SP2

This article was previously published under Q313573

SYMPTOMS

The Exchange 2000 message transfer agent (MTA) may generate an access violation and stop, which requires you to restart the MTA. A message causes the access violation while the MTA is decoding the relayed message. If Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) logging is enabled, the MTA stops before the message is written to the Bf0.log. You must remove the DBxxxxxx.dat file that contains the message from the Mtadata folder before you can successfully restart the MTA.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because a Siemens Mail.X MTA uses encoding for the Deferred Delivery date attribute that is different from the encoding that the Exchange MTA 2000 expects.
