Automatic Detection Causes the Program to Stop Responding for Several Seconds (313347)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000
This article was previously published under Q313347 SYMPTOMS
When the auto-detection process runs in Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000, the program that requests auto-detection may appear to stop responding (hang) for as long as 10 seconds.
CAUSE
Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 supports auto-detection both for Web proxy clients and Firewall clients. The Firewall client supports all programs that use Windows Sockets (Winsock) for their network connectivity. The auto-detection process allows for several different ways for the client to locate the appropriate service (for example, Web Proxy Auto-Detection or WinSock Proxy Auto-Detection). Because of this, it can take several seconds for auto-detection to occur, particularly if the client has to wait for backup mechanisms to start and complete before auto-detection determines that it cannot find the needed service.
If auto-detection is enabled on the Firewall client, the client attempts to auto-detect the firewall after every new Winsock request to use remote resources. While auto-detection completes, the program that makes the request may appear to stop responding for approximately 10 seconds. If an program makes several requests at short intervals, performance may suffer significantly.
RESOLUTIONThis problem was corrected in Internet Security and Acceleration Server Service Pack 1. For additional information, click the article number below

After you install SP1, the Firewall client performs auto-detection in a separate thread and waits for the thread only if a set amount of time has passed since the previous attempt to run auto-detection.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
