XADM: How to Create Exchange Server 5.5 Mailboxes from Active Directory (313210)

SUMMARY

During a transitional stage when you are upgrading from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000, you may want to use the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC to create Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox-enabled objects before you install Exchange 2000 into Active Directory. This article describes how to do this.

  1. Set up the Active Directory Connector (ADC) from the Exchange 2000 CD, and create a recipients Connection Agreement between Exchange Server 5.5 and Active Directory.
  2. On a Windows 2000 domain controller, run setup /forestprep from the Exchange 2000 CD, and choose to join the Exchange Server 5.5 organization.
  3. From the Exchange 2000 CD, install either the Active Directory Connector Manager or the Exchange System Manager on the Windows 2000 server on which you want to create the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox-enabled objects.
After you perform the preceding procedure, you can create mailbox-enabled objects in the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC with either of the following methods:
  • Right-click an existing account, and then click Exchange Tasks.-or-

  • When you create a new account, you will be prompted to create the account as mailbox-enabled.
