Internet Access Is Restricted After You Upgrade from Windows Me (313067)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q313067

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Microsoft Windows XP, you may not be able to browse the Internet. You may receive the following error message in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
"Page cannot be displayed."

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Zone Alarm software developed by Zone Labs is installed before you upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP. Zone Alarm restricts all access to the Internet and to the local network computers by enabling a proxy server setting in its software.

RESOLUTION

If you use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to uninstall ZoneAlarm after you upgrade to Windows XP, the TrueVector service that is installed with ZoneAlarm is not uninstalled. To completely uninstall the ZoneAlarm software, you must use the ZoneAlarm uninstall program.

For more information about how to uninstall the Zone Alarm Firewall software from a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, please visit the following Zone Labs Web site:
