This step-by-step article describes how to configure a Pocket PC to receive e-mail messages from a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server. This may be useful because many Internet service providers (ISPs) use the POP3 e-mail protocol for the e-mail accounts they offer.

Configuring Your ISP Connection- On the Start menu, tap Settings.
- Tap Connection, and then tap Modem.
- Tap New Connection to open a new settings file.
- In the Enter a name for the connection box,
enter a descriptive name for the connection to your ISP.
- In the Select a modem box, choose the modem you want to use to connect to your ISP.
NOTE: If you are using a CompactFlash modem, you must insert the modem into the device to select it from the list. - Select your modem's baud rate in the Baud Rate box.
- Tap Next.
- Enter your ISP's phone number, and then tap Next.
- If you use a calling card or credit card when you make calls, enter them in the Extra dial-string modem commands box.
- Tap Finish. The connection to your ISP is added to the Connection box.

Configuring the Pocket PC- Obtain the IP address or name of your ISP's POP3 server that receives e-mail messages.
- Obtain the IP address or name of your ISP's Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server that sends e-mail messages.
- On the Start menu, tap Programs, and then tap Inbox.
- Tap Services, and then tap New Service.
- In the Service Type box, tap POP3 Mail.
- Enter a name for the service in the Service Name box, and then tap Next.
- Tap the connection to your ISP in the Connection box.
- In the Server box, enter the IP address or name of the incoming mail server.
- Type your user name and password in the User ID and Password boxes, and then tap Next.
- Leave the domain name blank unless you are connecting to a Microsoft Windows NT-based server.
- Enter the name of your ISP's SMTP server. Typically, this is the same as the name of the incoming mail server.
- Tap Next.
- Set your e-mail options, if needed, and then tap Next.
- By default, the Pocket PC Inbox retrieves only the e-mail headers. After you view them, you can specify the actual messages you want, and the Inbox retrieves them. If you want to just want to go ahead and retrieve both headers and messages, tap Get full copy of messages, and then click to clear the Include 100 lines check box.
- Click to select the Get meeting requests check box if your organization uses Microsoft Outlook and you want to retrieve and respond to meeting requests.
- Tap Finish.
