SYMPTOMS

When you install Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following error message:
Setup failed while installing the subcomponent WebForms with error code 0xc007007e.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps while the service pack error message is displayed (do not quit the service pack update):
  1. Start Registry Editor (use either Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{44EC053A-400F-11D0-9DCD-00A0C90391D3}\InProcServer32

NOTE: You must scroll past the keys that start with a period (.) before you find the normal alphabetical listing of keys.
  3. Note the value of this key (this value is the default value).
  4. Click Start, click Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  5. Type Atl.dll in the Search for files or folders named box, click the local hard disks that you want to search in the Look in box, and then click Search now.

Note that the path that is listed in the default value that you noted in step 3 is not a valid path to Atl.dll.
  6. Modify the default value so that it lists the valid path to Atl.dll.
  7. Click Retry in the Exchange 2000 SP1 Update dialog box.
