SYMPTOMS

Exchange Monitoring notification messages may be filtered out by SMTP filtering when the Blank Sender Filtering option is turned on.

CAUSE

The Exchange Monitoring message has an invalid RFC 822 'FROM' address and is seen by the filtering as being blank.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

Exchange Monitoring uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to send notification messages. WMI adds 'via WMI auto-mailer' to the 'FROM' address. The final 'FROM' address looks similar to the following address:

WinMGMT@server name via WMI auto-mailer.

Because this is not a valid RFC 822 address, it is ignored.
