SYMPTOMS

When an administrator tries to generate Resultant Set of Policy data for a user and computer that reside in another forest, the administrator may receive the following error message:
The Active Directory query for the specified user container failed.
Details:
A referral was returned from the server.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:
  • An incorrect LDAP distinguished name. In Windows Server 2003, you cannot browse to the trusted forest in the Resultant Set of Policy Wizard. Because of this, administrators that want to generate Resultant Set of Policy data must manually type the full distinguished name of the user and/or computer. To avoid the symptom that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, this path must correspond to an actual object.
  • The domain or forest for which you want Resultant Set of Policy data may not be online, or no domain controller may be available for that forest or domain.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior:
  1. Verify that the LDAP distinguished name is correct for the user and/or computer settings as appropriate.
  2. Verify that connectivity exists between the server that is generating Resultant Set of Policy data and a domain controller for the appropriate forest.
  3. Verify that all DNS settings for the target domain controller exist and are correct on a DNS server that is used by the local computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The "A referral was returned from the server" error message is a catch-all error message that only reflects that no data could be obtained for the object that was specified.
