Stack Overflow Error Occurs When Printing to an HP DeskJet 1000 Series Printer (312472)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print to your Hewlett Packard (HP) DeskJet 1000 Series printer, you may receive a "Stack Overflow" error message.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you do not have the following command in the [Compatibility] section of the Win.ini file: 
HPW3VLS=0x400000

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, edit the [Compatibility] section of the Win.ini file. To do this, follow these steps:

Method for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type sysedit, and then click OK.
  3. Click the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI window.
  4. Place the insertion point at the end of the "[Compatibility]" line, and then press ENTER. A new blank line will appear beneath [Compatibility].
  5. Type the following code: 
    HPW3VLS=0x400000
    NOTE: The preceding code contains zero characters; these are not the letter "O".
  6. On the File menu, click Save.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.
  8. Restart the computer.

Method for Windows Millennium Edition

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK. This opens the System Configuration Utility.
  3. Click the Win.ini tab. A list of headers in the Win.ini file appears. Scroll to the header that is labeled Compatibility. Select the word "Compatibility," and then click New.
  4. A new line will appear in the Compatibility section with a blinking cursor at the insertion point. Type the code 
    HPW3VLS=0x400000
    and then press ENTER. This adds the new entry to the Compatibility section.
  5. To complete the process, click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.
