"Error 1704: An install for Visio 2002 is currently suspended" error message when you run the Visio 2002 Setup program (312308)

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Visio 2002 Setup, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Error 1704: An install for Visio 2002 is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that install to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?
As a result, you cannot set up Visio 2002.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following key is present in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the registry key, and then rerun Visio Setup. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

  4. Select the key, and then press DELETE.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the delete operation.
  6. On the Registry menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.
  7. Run Visio Setup.
