SYMPTOMS

If you try to add Internet Protocol (IP) packet filters from the Input Filters dialog box in a Routing and Remote Access policy, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred while trying to save the changes to the profile. 0x80040e21

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you try to add more than 71 input filters. Input filters are limited to 71 in number.

Also, all input filters that you add beyond the 71 input-filter limit are lost.

MORE INFORMATION

Before you install this update, you can enter many more input filters than the 71-filter limit, but then you receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article when you click OK to save your changes in the policy dialog box.

This change forces Windows to test for remaining space as you enter each input filter, and to immediately display the error message when there are more than the permitted number of input filters. Additionally, the permitted size limit of the input filter set is increased.
