A Direct RAS Connection on a Serial Cable Always Uses One Stop Bit (312284)

A direct Remote Access Service (RAS) connection over a null-modem serial cable may not connect if one of the devices is not running Windows NT 4.0, and if the connection is not set to use one stop bit.
CAUSE
RAS Manager is designed to use one stop bit for direct cable connections, no matter what settings you configure.
RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, configure both computers on the direct RAS connection to use one stop bit.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
