MacXLX: Error Message When You Insert File into Excel X: The File Could Not Be Accessed (312265)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a file into Microsoft Excel X for Mac, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
The file could not be accessed.
An unexpected error has occurred.
AutoRecover has been disabled for this session of Excel.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The file that you want to insert is located on a network file server.

    -and-
  • The full path to the file that you want to insert is very long.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, reduce the length of the path by shortening the folder names or by changing the location of the file that you want to insert before you insert the file into Excel X. For example, copy the file from the nested network location to a local drive before you insert it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
