Computer beeps when you try to assign keyboard shortcuts to a menu command in Excel for Mac (312262)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to assign a keyboard shortcut to a menu command, you may hear a beep. Additionally, you cannot assign the key combination.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you try to use one of the following key combinations:

COMMAND+K
COMMAND+P
COMMAND+Q
COMMAND+W
COMMAND+Y
COMMAND+Z
COMMAND+SHIFT+P
COMMAND+SHIFT+Q
COMMAND+SHIFT+Y

These key combinations are used by the Mac operating system and cannot be assigned to commands in Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the CONTROL key in place of the COMMAND key or include the SHIFT key in the key combination. The following key combinations are valid:

CONTROL+K
CONTROL+P
CONTROL+Q
CONTROL+W
CONTROL+Y
CONTROL+Z
COMMAND+SHIFT+K
COMMAND+SHIFT+W
COMMAND+SHIFT+Z

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
