SYMPTOMS

When you click Get External Data on the Data menu in Microsoft Excel X for Mac, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • The New Database Query submenu item is unavailable and appears dimmed.
  • When you click New Database Query, you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
    Microsoft Query is not installed.
This issue occurs because the Microsoft Query program is not installed. Microsoft Query is not included with Microsoft Office v. X for Mac.
To resolve this issue, download and install Microsoft Query X for Mac.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot create new queries in Excel X for Mac if Microsoft Query X for Mac is not installed. However, if you open older files that contain a saved query, you can click Data Range Properties on the Get External Data submenu or on the External Data toolbar. You can also refresh an existing query.

You can also perform a Web query or a refreshable text query, because these do not use Microsoft Query. Therefore, Run Saved Query, Import Text File, and Import from FileMaker Pro are all available on the Get External Data submenu.
