MacPPTX: When You Save Slides as Graphics Files, Resolution Settings Are Unexpectedly Reduced (312243)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac
This article was previously published under Q312243 SYMPTOMS
When you save slides from a Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac presentation as any of the following file types, the resulting file may not be saved with the resolution setting that you selected:
- Tag Image File Format (TIFF)
- Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
- Windows Bitmap (BMP)
- Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because PowerPoint X has a maximum resolution limit when you save slides in different formats. When you select a resolution higher than the limit, the slide is saved at the maximum resolution. For example, if you save the slide as a PNG file with a resolution of 1600 dots per inch (dpi), the slide is actually saved with a resolution of 200 dpi.
The following are the maximum resolution settings that PowerPoint X uses when you save slides as graphics files:
File Type Resolution (dpi)
Macintosh Picture (PICT) 1600
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) 200
Portable Network Graphics (PNG) 200
Windows Bitmap (BMP) 100
Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) 100
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, either save the image within the available resolution limits, or export the file to a third-party graphics program and then save the image, using the resolution setting that you want.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
You can also save slides as graphics files by clicking to select the Compress graphics files check box in the Preferences dialog box. The associated Image quality setting applies to slides saved as PICT, JPEG, and PNG files. This option does not apply to slides saved as TIFF and BMP files.
