MacOFFX: Value Pack Installs REALbasic in the Wrong Location (312242)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office v. X for Mac
- Microsoft Excel X for Mac
- Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac
- Microsoft Word X for Mac
This article was previously published under Q312242 SYMPTOMS
If you try to use a REALbasic program that opens an Office v. X for Mac document, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following:
Can't initialize OLE, failed.
An Exception of class
WordException was not handled.
The application must shut down.
If you run code in the REALbasic Editor that calls an Office application object, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Unknown object
Unknown type
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the Value Pack Installer for Office v. X for Mac does not install REALbasic in the correct location to work with Office v. X programs. Instead, it puts the REALbasic folder and program into the Applications folder.
The REALbasic program and Plugins folder must be located in the Microsoft Office X/Office folder for full functionality with Office v. X programs.
The ReadMe file included with Office v. X for Mac gives an incorrect location for these files.
RESOLUTION
Because you cannot change where the Value Pack installer puts the REALbasic folder, you must manually move the REALbasic program and the Plugins folder from the REALbasic folder into the Microsoft Office X:Office folder. Replace the plug-ins from the Value Pack with Office v. X plug-ins from the REAL Software Web site.
NOTE: Do not use aliases to the REALbasic folder instead of moving the items to the Office folder. This causes REALbasic to quit or stop responding (crash).
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
