This article was previously published under Q311991 SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, the taskbar may not display an MSN status icon.
CAUSE
This issue is caused by incorrect settings in the Msn.cms file.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, locate the Msn.cms file, and then make the appropriate changes in the file. Follow these steps:
- In Windows Explorer, locate the Msn.cms file:
- Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files and Folders.
- In the Search for files and folders named box, type Msn.cms.
- In the Look in box, click the root of the hard disk (usually C:).
- Click Search Now.
If you find two copies of the file, use the copy that has the HideTrayIcon setting.
- Open the file in a text editor.
- Locate the TrayIcon= line in the file, and then delete the value that follows the equal (=) sign. For example, if the line reads TrayIcon=MSN\MSNLogo.ico, delete MSN\MSNLogo.ico so that the setting is blank.
- Locate the HideTrayIcon= line, and change the value from the current value (which is probably 2) to 0.
- Save and then close the file.
- Restart your computer, and then start MSN to see the MSN status icon on the taskbar.
