The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0

This article was previously published under Q311951

SYMPTOMS

When you view the log file for the Cluster service (Cluster.log), the following entry may appear multiple times in the log:
[ClRtlCopySecurityDescriptor] MakeSelfRelativeSD failed, 0x00000551

CAUSE

When the Cluster service copies or updates a security descriptor, a call is made to make sure that the security descriptor is self-relative. If the descriptor is already self-relative, the error message may appear multiple times in the log file for the Cluster service.

RESOLUTION

This error is harmless; you can generally ignore these error messages. Error code 0x00000551 means "A security descriptor is not in the right format (absolute or self-relative)."
