FIX: Multiple Remote Read Requests May Cause AV in Message Queuing Service (311946)

SYMPTOMS

An access violation (AV) may occur in the Microsoft Message Queuing service when there are multiple remote computers reading from one or more of its queues.

CAUSE

Incorrect reference counting leads to an internal queue buffer pointer being prematurely released. This results in memory corruption and random access violations.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
