SYMPTOMS

When you try to configure an extra initialization string for a modem, you may be unable to add a string that is longer than 40 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you may use Registry Editor to add the required string:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

The fix that is described in this article extends the modem extra initialization string limit to 57 characters. 57 characters is the maximum number of characters that most modems can accept.
