Incorrect Criteria for the "DNS Server Has Shutdown" MOM 2000 Rule (311796)

SYMPTOMS

The "The DNS Server has shutdown" event processing rule under either of the following locations may not work as you expect:
  • Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 Administration Console\Rules\Processing Rule Groups\Microsoft Domain Name Service (DNS)\DNS for Windows 2000\Event Processing Rules
  • Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 Administration Console\Rules\Processing Rule Groups\Microsoft Domain Name Service (DNS)\DNS for Windows NT 4.0\Event Processing Rules

CAUSE

This problem can occur if incorrect criteria exists in the rule. Specifically, this problem can occur if the advanced criteria for the provider name is incorrect, where "DNS" should be used instead of "System".

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the "Provider Name" criteria, and then add it back with an "equals" value clause of "DNS".

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
