PUB2002: Text Hyperlink Is Broken After You Use Export as Web Page Command (311760)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q311760

SYMPTOMS

When you apply any fill to a text box and then apply hyperlink information to any text inside the text box, the hyperlink will be broken when you use the Export as Web Page command on the File menu.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Export as Web Page command strips code that is necessary to display text boxes that contain both fills and hyperlinks.

Publisher 2002 requires high-fidelity HTML code to display text hyperlinks and a background fill together on a Web page. Because the Export as Web Page command strips this code to reduce file size, any text hyperlink in a text box with an applied background fill is displayed only as a picture.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the publication that contains the text box with a text hyperlink.
  2. Draw a rectangle over the text box that contains the text hyperlink, and then select the rectangle.
  3. On the Format menu, click AutoShape.
  4. In the Format AutoShape dialog box, apply some fill color, and then click OK.
  5. With the rectangle still selected, on the Arrange menu, point to Order, and then click Send to Back.
  6. On the File menu, click Web Page Preview to preview the Web page and verify that the text hyperlink works.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Publisher 2002 that adds functionality to Publisher 2002. An additional feature, "Export as Web Page", provides the ability to export HTML without special information that is used only when the Web page is reopened (round tripped) inside Publisher 2002.

If the Export as Web Page command is not listed on the File menu on your installation of Publisher, the Publisher 2002 public update is not installed. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
