You cannot use Office programs to overwrite documents that are checked out (311740)

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message:
The file file_name already exists. Do you want to
- Replace existing file
- Save changes with a different name
- Merge changes into existing file
You may receive this error message if you:
  1. Check out a document.
  2. Copy the document from the computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server to a local folder.
  3. Edit the document.
  4. Use the Save As command in one of the Microsoft Office programs to try to overwrite the version of the document on the computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server.
After you receive the error message, if you click Replace existing file, you receive an error message that is similar to:
Word did not save the document. (file_name)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 2.
