Cannot Use Extended Characters in Strong Passwords on Pocket PC 2002 (311346)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Pocket PC with Windows CE 3.0

This article was previously published under Q311346

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to confirm the strong (alphanumeric) password on your Pocket PC 2002-based device, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Your password must be at least seven characters long and contain a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, or punctuation.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your password contains extended characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use only the English character set when you set a strong (alphanumeric) password on on your Pocket PC 2002-based device.

MORE INFORMATION

The strong password may only contain capital or lowercase letters, as well as numbers and the punctuation symbols that are normally available on an English-standard keyboard. On a Pocket PC 2002-based device, this means that any character that is made accessible by the extended keyset key (to the right of the CTL key) cannot be used for a strong password on the device.
