SYMPTOMS

When you try to install BackOffice Server version 4.5 from the Visual Studio, Enterprise Edition version 6.0 package, you may receive the following error message:
This product can not be installed on Windows NT Workstation 5.0.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when you try to install BackOffice Server 4.5 on a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer in preparation for the installation of Visual Studio 6.0 on the same computer. This does not work because you cannot install a server program (BackOffice Server 4.5) on a non-server program (Windows 2000 Professional). Although BackOffice Server 4.5 is a prerequisite to the installation of Visual Studio 6.0 on a Windows 2000 Server-based computer, it is not a prerequisite for a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer.

Windows 2000 Server contains most of the system components on the BackOffice 4.5 CD. To install these system components, use the Windows 2000 Add/Remove Programs control panel.

To prepare your Windows 2000 Server system to install Visual Studio 6.0, you will:
  • Install Windows 2000 Server-specific technologies.
  • Install or upgrade to BackOffice 4.5.
When you have completed the procedures detailed in this section, you will be ready to install Visual Studio 6.0.

To prepare your Windows 2000 system to install Visual Studio 6.0, you will:
  • Install Windows 2000 Server-specific technologies.
