VALUEADD and SUPPORT Folders Are Not Included on OEM CD-ROMs (311246)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q311246 SYMPTOMS
If you are using a computer that an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) provided with a pre-installed copy of Windows XP, the Valueadd and Support folders may not exist on your hard disk or on the recovery CD-ROM that was included with your computer.
CAUSE
This issue can occur because OEM computers that include a pre-installed copy of Windows XP do not include a Windows XP CD-ROM, or the Valueadd and Support folders. Instead, OEM computers typically include a restoration CD-ROM, and this CD-ROM does not contain the Valueadd and Support
folders. This is because, by default, the Windows XP OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK) does not add these two folders as part of the pre-installation process, so the folders are not included on the OEM disk images.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your computer to inquire about the availability of these folders.
MORE INFORMATION
In order for OEMs to include these two folders on their image CD-ROMs or the pre-installed copy of Windows XP on the hard disk, the OEM would have to customize their build process.
The Valueadd folder contains extra components that are included with Windows XP. Many of these components have not been fully tested for compatibility with Windows XP, however, they can still add value to your Windows XP-based computer if you decide to install them. The Msft folder in the Valueadd folder contains software and associated information that is developed and written by Microsoft. The components in this folder are supported by Microsoft. Among others, some of the utilities in this folder are USMT Command line components, NTBACKUP, additional fonts, and the unsupported NetBEUI protocol.
The 3rdParty folder in the Valueadd folder contains software and associated information that was developed and written by third-parties. None of the software programs in this section of the Valueadd folder are Microsoft products, and Microsoft's inclusion of these programs in this Valueadd folder does not imply any endorsement by Microsoft of such programs, any claims made about such programs, or such program's ability to operate in conjunction with any Microsoft products.
The \Support\Tools folder contains a Windows Installer file (Suptools.msi) that installs the Support Tools utilities and tools on your computer's hard disk. Among others, some of the utilities that can also be found on this folder are the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, Remote Desktop Client (to be installed on non-Windows XP computers), and tools for Remote Installation Server deployments.
NOTE: The Application Compatibility Toolkit does not install with the Support Tools.
