Error Message When You Insert a PC Card During USB Audio Playback (311236)

SYMPTOMS

If you "hot dock" a device (such as a PC Card) while a Universal Serial Bus (USB) audio device is playing sound, one of the following symptoms may occur:
  • Sound playback may cease for a short period.
  • Sound playback may stop completely.
  • Noise may be played back instead of the proper sounds.
  • An error message may be displayed, or the audio program may stop responding (hang).
If the program hangs or automatically quits, Windows may become unstable. Microsoft recommends that you reboot the computer as soon as possible if you suspect that this has occurred, or if Windows seems to respond to input improperly.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Plug and Play configuration manager detects the insertion of the new device and initiates a resource rebalance. A Plug and Play resource rebalance stops the USB host controller, and then removes resources. The same, or new, resources are applied to the device before is it restarted. While it is stopped, the controller cannot communicate with any USB device. The audio device driver detects this condition and notifies the audio player. The response that you see depends on how the program handles the error.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods:
  • "Hot dock" PC Cards only when no sounds are being played back by a USB audio device (wait until playbacks stops, or stop it manually).
  • Assign manual resources to the USB host controller. If your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) provides USB legacy support, and it is enabled, please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that are listed in the "References" section of this article for information about USB host controller settings.

Setting the USB Host Controller to Use Manual Settings

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand the Universal serial bus controller item by double-clicking it.
  4. Click Vendor name PCI to USB Host Controller, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Resources tab.
  6. To disable automatic settings, clear the Use automatic settings check box, if it is not already cleared.
  7. Click the Input/Output Range resource, and then click Change Setting.
  8. Select another value that does not result in a resource conflict.
  9. Restart your computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
