Personalized Content Objects Disappear When You Browse to a Site (311198)

If the server is stressed, the personalized content object (PCO) pipeline may cause access violations during cache refresh. In addition, the PCOs may disappear when you browse to a site. The following event log entry always accompanies this error:
Event ID ( 4104 ) in Source ( Commerce Server 2000 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Component Execution failed for component[0x0] hr: 0x80004005
ProgID: Commerce.CSFInitPipeline.1
Dictionary error: Value for key 'factory' in dictionary 'Advertising cache' missing (expected a variant of type 9).
CAUSE
This problem occurs when a pipeline component that runs in a different thread receives an object from the old cache that is equal to Nothing.
When the pipeline component attempts a call on the Nothing object, an access violation occurs.
RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
