SYMPTOMS

When you are running Ntbackup.exe to back up the system state on a domain controller, Ntbackup may quit silently. (Ntbackup quits without displaying any error messages.) This problem can occur when you back up to a tape or to a file. Additionally, you may receive the following event message in the system event log: Event Type: Error
Event Source: VSS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5013

Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: Computer_name
Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Shadow Copy writer EventLogs called routine BackupEventLogW which failed with status 0x800705aa (converted to 0x800423f4).

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you back up the system state on a domain controller that has more than 12 IP addresses on one network adapter.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove IP addresses until a single network adapter has no more than 12 IP addresses.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
