ENT2001: "-8738" Error Message When You Try to Start Entourage (311124)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Entourage 2001 for Mac, the program may not start, and then you may receive an -8738 error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the computer contains a damaged or incorrect version of Text Encodings files or the Text Encoding Converter extension.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, verify the version of the Text Encodings files and the version of the Text Encoding Converter extension. Then, if the Text Encodings files are of a different version from that of the Text Encoding Converter extension, reinstall the Text Encoding Converter file.

Verify the Version of the Text Encodings Files

To verify the version of the Text Encodings files, follow these steps:
  1. On the desktop, double-click Macintosh HD, double-click System Folder, and then click Text Encodings.
  2. On the View menu, click View Options.
  3. Click to select the Version check box if it is not already selected, and then click OK.
  4. Open the Text Encodings folder by clicking the arrow to the left of the folder, if it is not already open.
  5. View the version number for each of the Text Encodings files.

    NOTE: The version number must be at least 1.5, and all of the files must have the same version number.

Verify the Version of the Text Encoding Converter Extension

  1. In the System folder, open the Extensions folder (by clicking the arrow to the left of the folder), and then click Text Encoding Converter.
  2. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  3. Verify the version number.NOTE: The version number must be the same as the number for the Text Encodings files in the System folder.
If the Text Encodings files are a different version from that of the Text Encoding Converter extension, you must reinstall the Text Encoding Converter file from the Value Pack folder on the Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac CD-ROM.

Install the Text Encoding Converter File from the Office 2001 Value Pack

  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Insert the Office 2001 for Mac CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. When the CD-ROM starts, double-click the Value Pack folder.
  4. Double-click Value Pack Installer.
  5. In the Value Pack Installer dialog box, click to select the Text Encoding Converter check box, and then click Continue.
  6. When a confirmation message appears, stating that the operation was successful, click Quit.
  7. Restart the computer.
