SYMPTOMS

After you download and install a digital certificate, the certificate may not appear in the Account Properties dialog box in Outlook Express.

The certificate does appear in Outlook Express if you click Digital IDs on the Security tab under Options. The certificate also appears in the Certificate Manager dialog box in Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the certificate is sent to an e-mail address that differs from the e-mail address in the account properties of Outlook Express. This can happen if:
  • The certificate is sent to an alias.
  • The certificate is sent to user@company.com, but the e-mail address in the account properties is user@mail.company.com.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, ask the organization that issued the certificate to send the certificate again, this time to the exact e-mail address that appears in the account properties of Outlook Express.

MORE INFORMATION

Sending encrypted mail over the Internet requires recipients' digital certificates. A potential recipient must first send you a digitally signed message with the recipient's digital certificate (digital ID), which you can then save to your Contacts folder. Likewise, to receive encrypted messages from others, you must first provide them with your digital certificate.
