Requirements for Inputting and Editing South Asian Languages- Localized version of the operating system
In order to input the South Asian languages, you must have a localized version of a Microsoft Windows operating system. You cannot input South Asian languages on the English versions of Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT 4.0.
- Type of Office installation
You must decide whether to install a localized version of Microsoft Office XP or to install the English version of Office XP with the Multilingual User Interface. If you only need to proofread the South Asian languages, you can install the English version of Office XP with the Proofing Tools installed.
Note: The Multilingual User Interface is installed from the
Multilingual User Interface Pack CD-ROMs.
The Benefits of Using a Localized Version:
You may prefer to use a localized version of Office if
your organization needs completely localized functionality and the additional
content that comes with some fully localized versions. Each localized version
includes at least two sets of appropriate Proofing Tools for the languages that
you are likely to use most often (for example, the Norwegian version includes
Norwegian, German, and English Proofing Tools). To expand that support to more
than 40 languages, you can add the Proofing Tools for Office XP to any
localized version.
Note Currently there is a localized version of Office XP only for
Thai.
The Benefits of Using the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack:
Office XP with MUI Pack simplifies deployment of Office
in large multinational organizations. Because of a common worldwide executable
file that is included for each Office program, IT administrators need to create
only one custom installation for users in all countries/regions. The MUI Pack
also includes Proofing Tools for Office XP, which enable users to create and
edit documents in more than 40 languages. Multinational companies can use the
MUI Pack to enable mobile users and others to share workstations, regardless of
their language, and to enable centralized global Help desks to switch language
interfaces on their computer screens to match the language interface of their
customers. Some dialog boxes and screens may not exist in the language
specified.

Configure the Multilingual User Interface In this configuration, the operating system is localized, which
allows input in the South Asian language. The English version of Office is
installed with the MUI Pack, to allow Office to display its menus and Help in
that localized language.
- Install the localized version of Windows 98, Windows Me, or
Windows NT 4.0, according to the steps provided with the product.
- Install the English version of Office XP.
- Install the Multilingual User Interface for the appropriate
language. To do this, follow these steps:
- Run Lpksetup.exe from CD-ROM 1 of the Multilingual User
Interface (MUI) Pack CD-ROM set.
- Follow the instructions provided by the MUI Pack Setup
to install the appropriate language.
Note If the language that you need to configure is not listed, read
the Lpkread.htm file that is included with the MUI Pack CD-ROM. Some languages
may not be listed in the Setup program, and special steps may be
required.
- Configure Office to use the new language interface. To do
this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office XP Language Settings.
- Select the User Interface tab.
- In the Display menus and dialog boxes
in drop-down list, select the language in which you want the menus and
dialog boxes to be displayed.
- In the Display Help in drop-down list,
select the language in which you want the Help files to be
displayed.

Install and Configure the Proofing Tools The following configuration uses a nonlocalized copy of the
operating system. This limits you from being able to input (type) in the
language. The Proofing Tools are installed, which gives you the ability to open
documents in the various languages and proofread them. Note The Proofing Tools are available as a part of the Multilingual
User Interface Pack or as a separate CD-ROM.
- Install the English version of Office XP on a Windows 98,
Windows Me, or Windows NT 4.0 desktop.
- Install the Office XP Proofing Tools. To do this, follow
these steps:
- Insert the Proofing Tools CD-ROM.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- Type cd
drive:\PTKSetup.exe.
Notecd drive is the drive letter for your
CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. - For the type of Setup, select Custom.
- Select the language for which you want to install
proofing tools, and then click Run All From My Computer.
- Click Finish to complete the installation.
- Verify that Word is set to automatically detect the
language type. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Microsoft Word.
- On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Set Language.
- Select Detect language automatically
check box, and then click OK.
Microsoft Word can now detect the language that was installed
by the Proofing Tools installation. Word also can check the spelling and
grammar in the language that was installed by the Proofing Tools
installation.
