REQUIREMENTS

To type and edit in an East Asian language in Word, you need to:
  • Configure Windows for the specific language.

For Windows

Windows 98 and Windows Me do not include the files that you need to type in an East Asian language. To configure the operating system so that you can type in an East Asian language, install the Input Method Editor (IME) and the Language Pack for the language you want to use, and then configure the keyboard to type in that language.

For Word 2002 (or Office XP)

If you only need to proof text in different languages, you can install the English version of Office XP (or Word 2002) and Microsoft Office Proofing Tools.

If you need the multinational features of Office, you can install either a localized version of Office XP or the English version of Office XP with Multilingual User Interface Pack.

Each localized version includes at least two sets of proofing tools for the languages you are most likely to use. Benefits of Office XP with Multilingual User Interface Pack

Microsoft Office XP with Multilingual User Interface Pack simplifies the deployment of Office XP in a large multinational organization. Because Office XP includes a common worldwide executable file for each Office program, IT administrators only need to create one custom installation for users in all countries/regions. Because the Multilingual User Interface Pack includes Office Proofing Tools, users can create and edit documents in more than 40 languages. Multinational companies can use Office XP with Multilingual User Interface Pack to enable mobile users and others to share workstations regardless of their language and to enable centralized global help desks to switch language interfaces on their computer screens to match those of their customers. Some dialog boxes and screens, however, may not be in the language specified.

Note Office XP with Multilingual User Interface Pack is only available through Open License, Select, and Enterprise Agreement volume licensing programs. It is not available in retail stores. CONFIGURATION

This section provides a step-by-step procedure to configure Windows and Word 2002 (Office XP) so you can type text in different languages.

Step 1: Install Word 2002 (or Office XP)

If you have not already done so, install Word 2002 (or Office XP) on your Windows 98- or Windows Me-based computer.

Step 2: Map the Keyboard to the Language

Before you can type in a language other than English, you need to configure the keyboard to match the language. For example, to type Chinese-based characters, configure the keyboard to map the same way as a localized keyboard. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Language Pack for the language you want to use. The Language Pack works with the Office XP Global IME. You need to install the Language Pack if both of the following conditions are true:
    • You are not running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP.
    • You are not running a localized language version of the operating system.
    1. Download the Language Pack that you want to install. The Language Packs are available at the following Microsoft Web sites:

      Simplified Chinese Language Pack

      Traditional Chinese Language Pack

      Japanese Language Pack

      Korean Language Pack

    2. Click Download. If you are prompted to open or save the file, click Save.
    3. After the file is downloaded to your hard disk, double-click it to install it.
  2. Install the Microsoft Global IME for Office XP. The Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language versions of Office each include IMEs for that language. If you are using a different language version of Office XP, you can download and install the Global IME for the additional language you want. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Download the Global IME you want. The Global IMEs for the East Asian Languages are available at the following Microsoft Web sites:

      Simplified Chinese IME

      Traditional Chinese IME

      Japanese IME

      Korean IME

    2. If you are prompted to open or save the file, click Save.
    3. Double-click the file to install it.
    4. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

      Note After you install the Language Pack and the Global IME, you can type and edit in East Asian languages. The keyboard for the language is installed and configured for you. Also, it appears as an option on the Language bar.
  3. Verify that the appropriate keyboard is installed. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Text Services.
    3. Click the Settings tab. Check to see if the language you want is listed in the Installed Services section. If your keyboard is not installed, click Add to install the keyboard you want.
    After you configure the keyboard, you can select the input language from the Language bar.

    For more information about the Language Bar, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type language bar in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

Step 3: Install Microsoft Office Proofing Tools

To check the spelling and grammar of text in a different language, you must install the appropriate language tools for the language you want to proof. To do this, use the method appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Install and Configure Microsoft Office Proofing Tools

Office Proofing Tools gives you the ability to check the spelling and grammar of different languages in a Word document.

To install Office Proofing tools, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Office Proofing Tools CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following:

    cd drive:\Ptksetup.exe

    where drive is the drive letter that contains the Proofing Tools CD.

    Or, click Browse to select and open the file.
  4. In the Proofing Tools Setup Wizard, click Custom for the type of setup you want to perform.
  5. Select the language proofing tools you want to install and then click Run all from my computer.
  6. Follow the instructions on your screen to install Office Proofing Tools.

Method 2: Install and Configure the Multilingual User Interface Pack

To display menus, dialog boxes, and Help files in an East Asian language, install the Multilingual User Interface Pack as well as a localized version of Windows 98 or Windows Me. When you install the Multilingual User Interface Pack, the proofing tools are also installed.

To install the Multilingual User Interface Pack for the language you want, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Multilingual User Interface Pack CD 1 into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following:

    cd drive:\Lpksetup.exe

    where drive is the drive letter that contains the Multilingual User Interface Pack CD.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to install the language.

    Note If the language you need to configure is not listed, read the LPKRead.htm file on the Multilingual User Interface Pack CD. Some languages may not be listed in the Setup program and you may need to follow special steps to install the language.

Step 4: Configure Microsoft Office Language Settings

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and click Microsoft Office XP Language Settings.
  2. Click the Enabled Languages tab. Verify that the language you want is included in the Enabled languages list.
  3. Click the User Interface tab if it is available, and then follow these steps.

    NOTE: The User Interface option is only available if the Multilingual User Interface Pack is installed.
    • In the Display menus and dialog boxes in list, select the language that you want the menus and dialog boxes to use.
    • In the Display Help in list, click the language that you want the Help files to use.

Step 5: Set Word to Automatically Detect Language

To set Word to automatically detect the language of the text that you type, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Set Language.
  3. Click to select the Detect language automatically check box and then click OK.
Word can now detect and check the spelling and grammar in the language that you installed when you installed Office Proofing Tools.
