An Error Message Is Displayed When You Open the Web Proxy Service Properties After You Run IISlockd.exe (310902)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0
- Microsoft Internet Information Server 5.0
- Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0
This article was previously published under Q310902 SYMPTOMS
When you run the Microsoft Internet Information Server Lockdown utility (IISlockd.exe), you may no longer be able to administer the Web Proxy service under the following conditions:
- You run the utility on a Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0-based computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0.
- You run IISlockd.exe with the default configurations or you used the Express installation mode.
If you right-click the Web Proxy service, and then click Properties, you may receive the following error message:
System cannot find the file specified.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because when you run IISlockd.exe in the Express installation mode or with the default configurations:
- The Scripts virtual directory is removed.
- The permissions for the IUSR_ComputerName account are changed.
Both of these changes affect the functionality of the Web Proxy service.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior:
- Run IISlockd.exe again. Click Undo to undo the changes that were made the last time that you ran IISlockd.exe.
- Run IISlockd.exe again.
- Click Advanced.
- Leave the default configurations for Remove Script Mappings, and then click Next.
- On the Additional Lockdown Options page, clear the following check boxes, and then click Next:
- Remove the Scripts Virtual Directory
- Set File permissions to prevent the IIS anonymous user from running system utilities
- Set File permissions to prevent the IIS anonymous user from writing to content directories
- Click Yes to complete the Lockdown Utility Wizard.
MORE INFORMATION
If you have run IISlockd.exe more than once, only the most recent changes are affected when you use the Undo option.
If a Scripts virtual directory still does not exist after using the Undo option, create a new virtual directory under the Default Web Site that is named "Scripts," and then point it to the Inetpub\Scripts directory.
