FP2000: You Are Notified That Windows Installer Has Been Updated Each Time That You Try to Install FrontPage (310848)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft FrontPage, you are prompted to restart your computer. After you restart your computer, you may receive a message similar to the following:

The Windows Installer has been updated. You need to restart the computer.

This behavior continues until you remove the FrontPage compact disc from your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the files associated with Windows Installer are corrupted.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

To resolve this issue, rename the corrupted files, and then download and install the most recent version of Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type msiexec.exe, and then click Search Now.
  3. When the search process is complete, right-click the file, and then click Rename on the shortcut menu.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, type msiexec.old, and then press ENTER.

    When you receive the confirmation message, click Yes.
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to rename all of the following files:
    • msi.dll
    • msihnd.dll
    • msimsg.dll
    • mspatcha.dll
    • riched20.dll
  6. Download and install the most recent version of Windows Installer:
    1. Browse to to the following Microsoft Web site:
    2. Click instmsi.exe.
    3. When the download dialog box appears, click Run this program from its current location.
    4. When the download process is complete, follow the instructions to install Windows Installer 2.0.
