SUMMARY

This article describes how to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the master computer.

NOTE: Before you follow these steps, verify that your network connection is working properly. In addition, check whether the computer has a modem and a network adapter or two network adapters installed.

Windows 2000

Modem/Network Adapter Configuration

  1. From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, point to Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click a dial-up connection, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Sharing tab, select the Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection check box. Under For local network, select your network adapter.
  3. Unless you want the technician system to have Internet access, clear the Enable on-demand dialing check box.
  4. Click OK. A message box appears, which states that your local area network (LAN) adapter's Internet Protocol (IP) address will be changed to 192.168.0.1. Click Yes. Your computer is now configured for ICS.

Two Network Adapter Configuration

  1. On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties. A list of local area connections appears.
  2. Right-click the icon for the local area connection that will not be used to connect to your target computer, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Sharing tab, select the Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection check box.
  4. Click OK. A message box appears, which states that your LAN adapter's IP address will be changed to 192.168.0.1. Click Yes. Your computer is now configured for ICS.

Windows XP

Modem/Network Adapter Configuration

  1. On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  2. Right-click the dial-up connection, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Advanced tab, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
  4. If you want the ICS server to automatically connect to the Internet, select the Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box.
  5. Click OK. A message box appears, which states that your LAN adapter's IP address will be changed to 192.168.0.1. Click Yes. Your computer is now configured for ICS.

Two Network Adapter Configuration

  1. On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  2. Right-click the network adapter that will not be connecting to the target system, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Advanced tab, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
  4. Click OK. A message box appears, which states that your LAN adapter's IP address will be changed to 192.168.0.1. Click Yes. Your computer is now configured for ICS.
