SYMPTOMS
When you try to retrieve messages from a Post Office Protocol (POP3) e-mail server and download the messages into a Personal Folders file, you may receive the following error message:
# messages couldn't be retrieved from the server. This usually happens when the connection to the server is lost due to network problems. Contact your administrator. Download error 0x80040403.
However, you are able to successfully send messages.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, create a new Personal Folders (.pst) file, and then set the new Personal Folders file as the default POP3 delivery point.
First make sure that you know which type of Outlook installation you are using. Start Outlook, click
Help, and then click
About Microsoft Outlook. Under
About Microsoft Outlook, note the type of installation, either
Internet Mail Only (IMO) or
Corporate or Workgroup (CW).
Then refer to the following list of Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, and follow the instructions in the article that is appropriate for the Outlook version and installation type (IMO or CW) that you are using.
